How long is it okay to leave breast milk at room temperature? How many days can it be kept in the refrigerator? How long in the freezer? Is it better to keep breast milk in the freezer or the refrigerator? How to warm breast milk? Is it okay to mix breast milk that was pumped at different times? All the answers to the questions that surely bother you about storing and preserving breast milk after pumping

A few basic rules before storing breast milk:

  1. Before transferring breast milk to the storage bags, it is important to make sure your hands are clean.
  2. Use sterile, BPA-free bags that are designed for this purpose, approved for use for breast milk by the Ministry of Health, can withstand the freezer, and have a hermetic closure, preferably double, so that the milk does not spill when you open it. For information on Ardo freezer bags
  3. It is recommended to keep small amounts of 60 ml, 40 ml, 80 ml, and a few 90 ml bags, so you don't have to thaw a large amount if you don't need it and then throw it away.
  4. It is important to note the freezing date on the packaging.

How long can breast milk be stored?

In a freezer with a separate door or in a separate freezer – deep freeze

Temperature:  -18 degrees Celsius or less. Recommended storage 6-12 months, store in the back of the freezer where the temp. is colder. After thawing, and before giving the milk to the baby, it is a good idea to warm the bottle with the milk in a container with lukewarm water so that the milk reaches room temperature. Sometimes after thawing frozen milk or warming breast milk in the refrigerator, we see a separation of the fat from the protein . The breast milk should be stirred in a circular motion, not shaken, after warming to obtain a uniform texture. Before feeding the baby from a warmed bottle, drip 2 drops on the inside of our arm and feel the degree of warmth.
